From the following item in the GSB Notebooks at Brown University
To the New York Times Saturday Review:
This paraphrase on the familiar rigmarole of “The House that Jack Built” was printed first in an early number of “The Pathfinder,” but without the name of the writer. It was said to be “a masterpiece of word-mongering,” whose author was unidentified, (but,) whoever he was must have been a genius at literary construction.”
The author was George Shepard Burleigh, and this writer has very lately taken tea with him in the City of Providence, R.I., where his eighty years are full of lively thoughts, although his frame is touched, as the ancient poet Horace said was his lot, with a twitch in the foot.
