Tanay's Reflections on Journalism

What drew you to journalism?

“I believe my curiosity about the world led me to journalism. Once you have the basic journalistic skills in place, this profession gives you the freedom to peel back the layers on whatever aspect of the world interests you, while also having a positive impact on wider society.”

Community media and mainstream media

“An ethnic media outlet likely serves a predominantly first-generation immigrant community or a diaspora that still has strong ties to their home country, and your stories are tailored accordingly. When you’re working for a mainstream media outlet, your job is to make your stories accessible to as wide a section of the population as possible.”

“Both types of media are vital in our society and should adhere to the same standards of journalistic rigor, but I see their roles as complementary.”

Urgent issues facing South Asian communities

“We need stories that break down how changes in immigration law, which can be very wordy and confusing, will affect the everyday lives of immigrants.”

“We also need to tell more stories about the undocumented members of our diaspora and do a better job advocating for their well-being.”

A generational perspective

“My generation is better supported than those who came before us. There’s growing awareness about mental health stresses and more access to grants, mentors, and opportunities to bring unique perspectives to our reporting.”

Advice to aspiring journalists

“This job can seem very thankless at times, but it’s a truly meaningful way to engage with the world. Question everything, be fair, and if you ever face a stumbling block, lean on your peers for support.”
