Bookstore and Pornography

Spartan Bookstore Manager tells members of the Women’s Center that the Penthouse magazine issue will be removed if there continues to be violence against women represented in their issues. Members of Women’s Center not happy with the conditional decision.
Women’s Center acknowledgement of the lack of urgency for women’s needs in comparison to other major issues. “‘Obviously what they think is violent and we (the bookstore) think is violent are two different things,’ Duval said.”
“Since defining pornography is such an elusive task, how can five women hope to make a decision on what magazine should be in a store?” Describes the anti-pornography movement as floundering; not being able to make a decision about what is a threat to women. Continues to belittle their efforts and tries to make it sound like they’re diverting their plans because of their “failure” “What is not so obvious is the connection these groups try to make between pornography and violence against women.” “If it was really that bad, society wouldn’t have tolerated it for so long.”
