Marmalade
A little orphan in the church-yard strayed,
To whom in pitying tones a lady said:
“Where hapless mourner is your mamma laid?”
She answered, blushing at her dabbled frock,
“Behind the door, mum, in the big stone crock!”
The lady thought it was the poor child’s sarce
And turned her all white eye up and grew scarce.

- note
- I do not know what the word "sarce" means at the end of the penultimate line. I am assuming it is some sort of slang or archaic terms for a parent, but I cannot locate a source to confirm this.
