Our Helpers
In the nurture of a soul
Gain and Loss – the married loves
That no human power divorces —
Work to make us strong and whole.
If disaster crouch below,
God and angels bend above us,
Guide the stars, and watch and love us,
And their truth by ours we know.
Love, and love, and only love,
Still they give for all our doing;
To our raging, chiding, wooing,
Ever calm as heaven above
To the pure are all things pure,
To the worthy all have worth;
Only earthlings shame the earth;
In our truth the words are truer.
“Make no haste and no delay,”
We have everlasting allies,
And the wine in our life’s chalice
Bears the bloom of primal day
Soul transfigures all to psychical [sic];
Every tree its fruit shall tend us
Every flaming sword defend us,–
Brand of Eblis or of Michael.
If the titans stormed the gods,
And wild havoc made in heaven.
Shone for us their flashing levin
Down their burning periods.
Serpent’s guide and Adam’s sin
Pharaoh’s pride, the blood of Jesus,
Nero’s wrath, and Plato’s thesis.
Shape the hope and heaven we win.
Truth has beauty for its lure;
Fable pushes back the portal
For some gleam of truths immortal,
Glimpsing through its clare-obscure.
Ancient night predicted morn,
With a ray beneath the dark,
And a life where death lay stark,
And a bliss of sorrow born.
Heaven gives servants to our need;
Be their livery black or golden
To the appointed task they’re holden,
As we use them so we speed,
In faith’s alchemy sublime
We wring living gold from dust;
Silent hope and patient must
Win the long results of time.
Every everlasting thing
Hath its root in graves of ages,
Striking through the central hedges [?]
To the One Life’s flowing spring
Slowly through each stellar [???]
We must bend, and blossom slowly
Slowly ripen to the holy
