Cricket

The sport of cricket is played throughout South Asia, and South Asian communities have created a vibrant and competitive cricket scene that spans the Bay Area. The Bay Area Cricket Alliance fields over 75 teams that stretch from the Sacramento Valley to San José and on to Fresno.

The history of cricket in South Asia is complex due to the game’s links to British colonialism, but its popularity has continued in the post-colonial period, with South Asian countries achieving great success at the highest levels of international competition. India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have all won the International Cricket Council Men’s Cricket World Cup, and India won the first-ever Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup in 2023.

In the Bay Area, cricket can create a space where players and fans of different nationalities and walks of life come together in the spirit of friendly competition. This portion of our exhibit documents the cricket scene in the greater Bay Area, and we plan to add more images and other artifacts in the coming months.
