Arundhati Parmar

“I see myself only as a journalist — not a South Asian one. But representation matters. When people of different backgrounds enter journalism, the stories become more varied, and the fabric of America grows stronger."

Arundhati Parmar’s journey began in Kolkata, inspired by journalists in her neighborhood and a grandmother who once ran a women’s journal in Assam. After early reporting in Indiana and Chicago, she discovered her calling in healthcare journalism, where she built a reputation for clarity and thoughtful analysis.

Now the Editor-in-Chief of MedCity News, Arundhati leads a team covering healthcare innovation and policy, pushing for reporting that “goes beyond the headline.” She believes journalism should be analytical, courageous, and relentlessly truthful, particularly in an age of misinformation.

Her perspective as a South Asian woman in mainstream U.S. media underscores both progress and persistence. Though she faced moments of bias early in her career, Arundhati chose to respond not with resentment, but with resolve:

“But you cannot let these moments of ignorance-imbued racism get you down. It is more a reflection of her lack of education than my value in society."

Parmar represents the growing number of South Asian journalists redefining what inclusion means in American newsrooms, not through identity labels, but through excellence, perspective, and integrity.

Advice to Aspiring Journalists

Be aware of your own biases as you enter a profession that requires objectivity over all else. Strive for the truth relentlessly so that the Sanskrit phrase "Satyameva Jayate" - Truth Alone Triumphs - doesn't become a casualty to deepfake videos and widespread disinformation even from people and sources you trusted before.
