In 1971, South Asia was shaken by the birth of another country, Bangladesh. Former East Pakistan broke away from Pakistan and emerged as a new nation. India, physically located between Pakistan and the new Bangaldesh, got involved in a conflict with Pakistan.  The Spartan Daily featured the UN talks about India and Pakistan's conflict in 1971. SJSU hosted emissaries from Bangladesh and the campus community responded to the political changes in South Asia.  Some students from India and Sri  Lanka in this period later emerged as major contributors to the South Bay community.
