The American GI Forum (AGIF) is a non-profit civil rights organization that primarily advocates for the rights and interests of Hispanic veterans and their families. It was founded in 1948 in Corpus Christi, Texas, by Dr. Hector P. García, a World War II veteran and physician. The organization initially focused on addressing the discrimination and inequities faced by Mexican-American veterans, particularly in areas such as access to benefits and medical care. Over the decades, the AGIF has grown to include chapters across the United States, continuing its mission to protect and advance the civil rights of Hispanic veterans and their families while also addressing broader issues of social justice and equality. The AGIF is dedicated to serving the community through political advocacy, educational programs, career services, and healthcare resources.

The Flores Mexicanas Pageant was an annual fundraising event with ticket sales supporting scholarships for local students. Contestants were judged on poise and beauty and had the opportunity to give a speech on a topic of their choice. The winner of the Miss San Jose GI Forum pageant would advance to represent the chapter at the California GI Forum pageant during the state convention. The state winner would then represent California at the national level. Thirteen representatives from San Jose have won the California competition, and five have won the national pageant.
