Hymn - Lord! while we gather in thy name
I.
Lord! while we gather in thy name
To plead the cause of the oppress’d;
Kindle once more the holy flame
Of love within our every breast.
II.
So may the words which we shall speak,
Sink down into the common heart,
And turn some erring soul to seek
Life's holier and gentler part.
III.
We know the tyrant's reign shall cease,
But tremble for his coming fate;
Lest spurning long thy proffer'd peace,
The sword of vengeance shall not wait.
IV.
O speed the day, when love shall melt
The proud oppressor's iron band;
Ere yet the burning bolts are felt,
Which quiver in thine awful hand.
V.
And while, O Lord, we ask of thee,
To break a brother's bonds in twain;
Make thou our willing spirits free
From hate, and fear, and every stain.
VI.
And may our souls grow more and more,
Intro that perfect sense of good,
Which circles MAN on every shore,
In one unbounded BROTHERHOOD.
