Hymn - Ere Yet the Soul of Man
I.
Ere yet the soul of man
Came from th' "Eternal Prime;"
Freedom, her radiant course began,
Twin journeyer with time.
II.
When Ruin's hand unruth,
Hath crush'd the worlds that be ;
Still shall she move in fadeless youth,
Link'd with Eternity.
III.
The tyrants’ rage is vain;
In vain their giant pow’r;
Fetter, and scourge, and bursting chain,
Shall pass in one dread hour.
IV.
Tho’ long with impious rod
They smite their bleeding prey,
Her bar'd right arm made strong by God,
Shall sweep their strength away.
V.
And from their dens among,
Shall leap the rescu'd thrall;
With loud Hosannas on his tongue,
As scourge and fetters fall.
VI.
Freedom shall never die;
Daughter of God, her throne
Shall stand throughout eternity,
Unshaken as His own.
