Hymn - Hark to the Bitter Wail
I.
Hark to the bitter wail
Borne on the Southern gale,
Thrilling and strong;
Where the poor African,
Robb'd of the rights of man,
All that his spirit can,
Bows to the wrong.
II.
Smother'd within its clay,
Pineth his soul away,
Shorn of its pow'r;
While the indwelling God
Flies from the falling rod
Leaving the shattered clod
Stripped of its dower.
III.
Pity, O bretheren!
Ye who have hearts of men
Plead for the slave;
Speak, e'er his bitter woe
Biddeth the thunder-blow
Lay the oppressor low;
Pity and save!
IV.
Have ye no worldly gain?
Give—for ‘tis not in vain;
Prayer and a tear;
Mighty, O mighty are
Tears and the earnest prayer
Ever and every where:
Precious and dear.
