Hymn - When Israel Left the Spoiler's Hand
I.
When Israel left the spoiler's land,
Led onward by Jehovah's hand;
The waters roll'd obsequious back,
And bar'd for him, their ocean track.
II.
God mov'd before the pilgrim crowd,
By night and day, with fire and cloud;
While under the resurging wave,
The tyrant found his glory's grave.
III.
Thus ever doth the hand of God
Destroy the proud oppressor's rod;
And smite with judgments stern and just,
His impious legions to the dust.
IV.
And thus shall his protecting wing,
Its shadow o'er the bondman fling
And his high glory, from afar
Shine out, his radiant guiding star.
V.
O God! who puts his trust in thee,
Shall know thy glorious liberty;
While doubt's dark billows backward roll,
Away from his advancing soul.
