Hymn: Not in vain did Israel sigh

                         I.
Not in vain did Israel sigh,
     Smitten by Egyptia's rod;
For, in answer to his cry,
     Saving help was sent from God!
When the weight of bondage lay
     Heaviest on heart and brain;
Darkness kindled into day,
     And the fetters burst in twain.

                         II.
Great was the deliverance wrought
     In Jehovah's dreadful name;
From the house of bondage brought, 
     Bannered by his cloud and flame;
Day and night the ransom'd host, 
     Hoping, trembling, mov'd along;
Till upon the Red sea's coast
     Doubtful stood the mighty throng.

                         III.
"Forward!" cried the man of God—
     And the sullen waves roll'd back,
While exulting Israel trod
     Safe along the wond'rous track,
Walld around with billows pil'd 
     High by the ETERNAL's breath— 
But when fierce the waves recoil'd 
     Pharaoh's legions sunk in death!

                    IV.
Ever changeless is the LORD;
     Still, as in the olden time,
Blazes forth his vengeful sword,
     'Gainst th' oppressor and his crime;
Though his patience waiteth long, 
     See! his arm is bar'd to smite
Shall not He who hateth wrong,
     Vindicate the trampled right:
