Baby Mary
From the land of Was-to-Be
To the realm of Here-We-Are
Little fairy Baby Mary
Comes with eyes alert to see
And to questing by ??
“What is this they call “Mamma”
Bright and rosy as a star,
And these giants, two or three,
Who just toss and tumble me;
Did Any[??] know me by my name,
That they seem so glad I came?”
Came from, O, so faraway, there the baby angels play!
Glad we are, you bouncy Baby;
And ho heeds how many miles
From us are the Golden Isles
Where you caught your glittering smiles
Since you are with us, sweet as may be!
Deeper than the worldly law
Of the pedant – can explore
Is the meaning of the smile
That with ?? glimmer slips
Over Baby’s rosy Lips
At a love-look’s tender wiles
For the smile reports how far
Up the keeps of life ye are,—
Far no Being but Soul can break
Into smiles for love’s dear sake!
This we know, and this we saw Baby dear!
The sweet light that makes our day
Is thy Spirit wrapped in clay;
And to keep it heavenly clear
Is our task appointed here,
For every day
While for loving you, you love,
And we thank the Poer above us—
—Love’s own Lord,—
For the duties He may lay
On our happy hearth today—
For our Mary, Household faery
Service is its own reward!
