Allah il Allah
As all the sun-sphere glows in every beam,
As the least artery has its heart like throb,
And every flame reports a burning world,
So Nature’s Soul in every atom lives.
No dust so small it carries not the whole,
The essential life, the primal formative force,
The Universe in embryo. The least mote,
Spun on its axis by a midge’s flight,
Repeats the revolutions of a world;
And star-dust drifting in the Milky Way
From the swift wheels of Power Omnipotent,
Whirls off and spins and glitters, like the dust
That sifts impalpable through the Lybian air.
To the small diatom, whose solar shield
Is a carved splendor of consummate art,
The polished pebble were a mazed globe
With forests of green moss, and towering Alps,
Less by an infinite than the Infinite
The Alpine jags our impassable hills,
The breaks of abrupt passion, pride, & ??
Are just a polished mirror where our God
Is glassed in perfect splendor. The rude shapes
Of rude men vanish in the spheric curve
Of whole Humanity, and Man the one
Is the pure image of his Fashioner.
“Allah il Allah!” is the Moslem’s cry,
The infinite Unit of the Universe
There is no God but God, the subject soul
Rules its own realm but through obedience
And so is master only as it stands
Recipient of the Master’s fluid force.
We cannot make no[r] mar one vital pulse
Eternal in all changes, Power is one.
The Proteus of the universe now as fire,
Now a blind whirl, anon a silent grasp,
In all the atoms of a living tree,
A will, a soul, a meteor’s headlong rush,
[missing line; page cut off]
And never lost, and never multiplied
The infinite God in infinite masquerade.
In Him we live and move, and have our being
For power is life, and motion the prolonged
Hot pulses of a Heart that throbs in all,
Time, space, and substance; and a perfect Soul
Makes perfect concord in the universe,
Full harmony from dissonances paired
Within the radius of its mastering care.
Somewhere in all that sounds the unjarring sphere
Somewhere the integral Man within the sweep
Of his torn asteroids. The errant dust
That wanders in the air breaks not the curve
Of the round earth, but wanders under law
Echoed[?] God’s “Thus far” commands the stormy soul
?? the proud waves of ocean swollen by storm.
The passionate leaps of wild will, the excess
Of separate life in its exuberant power,
Hurled this way from its center, counterpoised
By passionate leaps of eager wills as wild
Hurled thitherward, move not the central pose
Of the sphered whole of individual lives,
That wheeled forever, and forever wheels
Unharring round the God heart’s thrilling sun.
Man sin, but Man fulfils his destiny,
The one pure offspring of the Father’s love,
From less to more unfolding, as the Christ,
In wisdom, power, and favor, the wide Race
Grows larger, nobler, as a single soul,
While by the slow compulsion of life’s law,
The insistent pressure of the Over Soul,
Each fragment of disintegrated Man
Grows spheric with completeness, sounding out
The imperfect curves of beauty, till at last
Shall each become harmonious, the pure type
Of the pure whole that from its least to most
As kept a golden equipoise, umarred
By disproportionate grandeurs.
God repeats
No syllable of his fiat “Let there be!”
That undulates through boundless space and time
Unspent forever, shaping world and motes
Alike from confluent atoms animate
Caught in the vortices of its vocal nodes.
Science that knew not God, but only Force
And her brute sons, Phenomena, yet has traced
The ripple to its wave, the manifold
Home to the One, and formulates for clay
The law that ends in harmony and soul.
Once in the stormy past of earth and heavens
When all was monstrous that we now call fair
All wild, convulsive, the terrific strife
Of Gods and Titans, of brute Elements
Waging fierce battle with creative Power,
The roar of earthquake, & the Typhoon’s crash
Were the sole oncry[?] of the Universe,
Its “Forward, March!” for countless centuries,
The God’s word, Progress, was announced alone
By crash and tumult, and the roar and flare
Of flame-haired comets through the darkness hurled
And seething planets whirled like lava-drips
From the great sun-core of revolving fire.
The abysses shuddered when some mother globe
Ploughed lurid furrows through the barren dark.
And flame and flood, and blackness torn by gleams
OF angry lightening and the pendulous swing
Of continent on seas of liquid fire
Tossed like the shells wherein we fare the deep.
Alone mellowed into music, and become
The rhythmic psalm of Order, Life and Love;
And not a tremor of that infinite roar
Has caused to vibrate through the living world
It quivers in the low inaudible hum
Of wings too thin to jar the vibrant bell
Of human bearing in the myriad buzz
Of whirling atoms that build up the hush[?]
Rising in spiral tissues from the cell
To the full tree, by orbits that repeat
The boundless motions of the starry whorl.
All pulses of all lives, and every stir
Of the quick nerve of sentience, and those trills
Of vibrant silence which we name our thought,
Are the return wave of that primal crash
Therewith God struck the dumb abyss to life!
The first is in the last, the whole is in each!
A life on earth is sun-fire; rippling rills
Melodious with motion, greening grass,
??esh rose, and lily, and the maiden blush
Of young love, stealing up from warm, red hearts
To make strong bosoms quiver with sweet pain.
??ace back their vibrant billows to their source,
Then[?] see it boil in Maelstroms of fierce flame,
Cataracts of molten rock, and lava jets
Raining[?] in cyclones of eternal fire
In beds of liquid metal whose hot tides
Are swathed in sheeted lightning for their mists
From central Hell vibrate concentric Heavens!
It roared; it sings; it grounds the granite globe,
It wafts the fragrance of the lily-bell.
Worlds wrapt in conflagration were the torch
Of its mad revels; young life’s sunrise flush
On the soft cheek of childhood is the glow
Of its unquenchable fire. All harmonies
Are but the confluence of that thunder jar
Which made first darkness shudder. In long years
The boiling craters soften their red fags
To garden sheds that burn with flowers for lava.
On old, first force, that blasted where it fell,
Is in the new form giving life and joy;
So shall the heavenly music be, at last
Th’accorded murmurs of the shrieks of hell.
Power’s perpetuity in time and space
Is Nature’s witness of the immanent God.
The infinity of Order that compels
The crash of dissonance into rhythmic waves,
Makes all musical, the measured march
Of endless evolution toward the Best,—
Is the one Gospel, written in starry script—
Of the soul’s growth in ever-opening good.
Shall He not rule his man-child, who has ruled
Stormy Orion and the flaming steeds
Of red Boöte’s? Shall he not make peace
In the sharp buzz of human insect swarms.
Celt, Slavic, or Caucasian, wo has wrung
Order from Chaos, beauty from the Hay
Of arts burned out in swirls of roaring flame!
What if life’s history through its aeons read
Like some wild dream terrific with the wrath
Of Man the victim, till ye groan “No God!”—
Or worse shrunk shuddering from an infinite hate,
Far from that stormy heart of running power
Calm life and beauty and unbounded joy
Are the creation o its fiery throbs
And wide and wider spreads the billowing force
In grand harmonic circles evermore!
There is no God but God, and ever joy
Of ?? worlds and every minim[?] life
That dances in the sunbeam prophesies
Of his prevailing presence, and our souls,
Planet or meteor, take their spheric flight—
Forever round that heart of infinite life,
Ripening forever into love and peace
Even as his worlds, through endless centuries!
