Katy Did
Who had a face & form
As ruddy, sound, & warm.
As a setting moon & rising sun before an Autumn Morn?
Katy did.
Who rolled with equal ease
Right over, neck & knees,
Or sideways, as ‘cute-angular’, as any way you please?
Katy did.
Who struck out with all four
And a will, to swim the floor,
Like a pollywog that means to be a pollywog no more?
Katy did.
Who kicked out a new door
Where his toes came to explore,
From the red morocco dwelling, what was going on before?
Katy did.
Who climbed up on my knee
And tweaked my beard to see
If all were tightly sorted as a whiskers out to be?
Katy did.
Who chattered like the birds,
With the golden buds of words,
Before they blossom into speech for the common human herds?
Katy did.
Who pushed the thorns apart,
And crept with baby art
Into mine, as might a honeybee into a thistle’s heart?
Katy did.
Who lent her own sweet eyes,
For her sister in the skies
To look from, & delight us with a moment of surprise?
Katy did.
When this budding, as it should,
Blooms in stately womanhood,
We answer to love’s wonder, “Who came with so much good.”
Katy did!
