Minos
Out from the glare of earth-lights and the din
Of earthly noise, into night and silence,
Where audible God-whispers rise like islands
By the wide sea of muteness folded in,
Son of the Gods retire! & wisdom win,
Cave-shadowed and shade-hushed beneath the highlands
Of lofty thought, beyond the rude world’s violence
Gem-like to ripen ere thy toils being.
So shall new laws, new manners, and new thoughts –
Flash from thy coming; and thy glance, deep-eyed
As the Immortals, and thy speech,—untaught
In sophist schools,—by wisdom magnified
Shall gleam dew-rayed of the path thou’st trod,
And sound thy steps shed for the effluence of the God.
