What he Left
O Lost Pet of my Pet! in what starry nook
Have the Angels hidden that face? —
Sweet baby-face with its wonderful grace!
I feel, or I guess, that the Cherubs mistook
For one of their own, far strayed to our zone,
This beautiful Babe on whose sun-type I look,
And robbed, all unmeeting, my bonny Kate Schmuck!
Babes are there anon by the wrinkling Brook
That runs by the Beautiful Throne,
Adorning the Throne with their live lily-zone,
While never but one had this Mother to rock!
Torn out of her life, in his shadow survive
The beauty & sweetness which never forsook
The face of thy Darling, my bonny Kate Schmuck.
As we would have reared, they will rear him, who took.
The Cherubs who found him afar;
For he came from afar beyond planet & star,
To bring, where we are, such a lore as no book
Could unfold, of the good in divine Motherhood,
Whose fathomless meaning lay clear in his look,
And shall bless thee forever, my bonny Kate Schmuck!
