Mabel
A vision of incarnate liveliness
In the lithe form of maiden beauty set,
All sweet and artless as a violet,
And pure as that Nymphea the waves caress,
Oft no my revery came to cheer and bless,
Though now these eyes in blinding tears are wet,
By one dread image startled! Clearer yet
Her dear form rises on my deep distress!
O God! in that one awful moment made
Forever beautiful, and forever young!
The unquenched love to which her loving clung,
Shall it not make the anguished heart afraid
To chide Thy ways, or doubt her living love
That ever-expanding yearns to cheer us from above?
